Seven names 1 condition! The definition of sleep apnoea can be confusing because it is described in research literature under many guises: Obstructive Sleep apnoea (OSA) Sleep Apnoea (SA) Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS) Sleep Apnoea/Hypopnoea Syndrome (SAHS) Obstructive Sleep Apnoea/Hypopnoea Syndrome (OSA/H) and of late, a new condition has been introduced Upper Airway Resistance Synd...

OBJECTIVE To explore the significance of the tumour necrosis factor-α/interleukin-10 ratio and the effect of continuous positive airway pressure in patients with different degrees of obstructive sleep apnoea hypopnoea syndrome severity. METHOD This study comprised 135 patients with obstructive sleep apnoea hypopnoea syndrome and 94 control subjects. RESULTS Tumour necrosis factor-α and tumo...
متن کاملSleep. 2: pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome.
The pathogenesis of airway obstruction in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome is reviewed. The primary defect is probably an anatomically small or collapsible pharyngeal airway, in combination with a sleep induced fall in upper airway muscle activity.
متن کاملSleep. 1: Obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome: definitions, epidemiology, and natural history.
Arguments over the definition of obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS) have still not been satisfactorily resolved. As a result, robust estimates of the prevalence of OSAHS are not possible. New approaches are needed to identify those who have "CPAP responsive" disease, enabling more accurate estimates to be made of the prevalence of the sleep apnoea syndrome in the community.
متن کاملCase reports Transtracheal air in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea hypopnoea syndrome
A 49 year old woman with typical obstructive sleep apnoea hypopnoea syndrome underwent an unsuccessful trial with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) followed by uvulopalatopharyngoplasty with septorhinoplasty, treatment with protriptyline, and a second CPAP trial that was abandoned. Transtracheal air was then given and normalised sleep and breathing at a flow rate of 5 l/min. A sustaine...
